What's the best thing you can do to support a family member who has CMS?
The best thing you can do is not judge them and give them privacy if they need it. Sometimes a movie I am watching with my family will trigger my urge to stem and I will excuse myself to my room. I know it is family time but they understand that sometimes I just need to get it out of my system.

In terms of a child with CMS, I’d say to not try to make the stereotypy go away and teach the child to own it and not be ashamed of their CMS. Learning to not care what other people thought of my stereotypy was the most important thing I learned. Far more important than learning to control it.
If by family member you mean a person over the age of 14 or so, you probably don’t need to do anything unless they ask you to. Just don’t make an issue of it. |
